D ō ng surname

Inheriting from Dayu, the ancestors were Donglou Gong and Dongbu Shi. The ancestors of the Dong family, who migrated to Hongdong during the Ming Dynasty, were people from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongdong County, Zhaocheng County, and other places. In the early Ming Dynasty, they were ordered to move to other places in Hongdong, and by the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Shanxi, and other places.

The earliest record of the Eastern surname can be found in the Southern Song Dynasty's "Family Name Garden".

There are four main sources of surnames:

① Originating from surnames based on location. In our country, there are surnames based on location, including East, West, and South. In Goryeo, there is a North surname.

② Originating from taking ancestral names as surnames. During the reign of Emperor Shun in ancient times, he had seven good friends. These seven people were treated as friends of the same level as Shun and did not want to become officials. Shun did not force them, but often sought their advice on governing the country and treated guests with courtesy, earning them the reputation of wise friends in the world. Among these seven wise men, the eldest one is called Dongbu Shi, who is said to be a descendant of Fuxi. He has the highest moral character among the seven, and his descendants take his name Dong as their surname.

③ Originating from the descendants of Dayu. At the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, when King Wu enfeoffed the descendants of the previous sages, the descendant of Yu the Great, Donglou Gong, was enfeoffed in the state of Qi. Among the descendants of Donglou Gong, there was a branch whose surname was the Eastern character in his name.

④ Originating from the change of the surname Dongfang. Among the descendants of those with a compound surname in the East, some people simplified their square characters to the East surname.

The county lords of the Dong surname mainly include Pingyuan County. Pingyuan Commandery: Established in the early years of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC). Equivalent to the northwest region of Shanxi Province today. The capital is located in the south of Pingyuan County, Shandong Province today. The capital of the Sui Dynasty was moved to Ling County, Shandong Province.

The main hall names of the Dong surname are Youshun Hall and Yulin Hall. Yulin Hall: In the Ming Dynasty, he rose to the east and was knowledgeable and capable of writing. The "Dictionary of Chinese Historical Names" includes 46 cases of the Dong family. Among the seven friends of Shun, a historical figure with the surname Dong, there is Dong Bu Shi; During the Han Dynasty, there was a great general named Dongguan Xiang; In the Yuan Dynasty, there were Dongliang Hui and Gongchang people; During the Ming Dynasty, there was an imperial censor named Dongxiao.

According to the seventh national census, there are 410 people surnamed Dong in Shanxi Province, 18 in Linfen City, and 1 in Hongdong County.

The ancestral shrine of the Dong surname is enshrined in the No.1 altar of the Ancestral Hall on the Great Huai Tree.

Migration: The ancestor of the Dongzhi branch of the Hongdong Dahuai tree migrated from Hongdong, Shanxi to Dongzhangzhuan Village, Xinhe County in the second year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty; The other ancestor of the Xinhedong family migrated from Hongdong, Shanxi to Duxing Village, Xinhe South in the third year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty.
