The lineage follows the Man family, with Deng Ji as its ancestor. It is the 34th surname among the top 100 contemporary surnames in China. The contemporary population with the surname Deng is about 6.5 million, accounting for approximately 0.54% of the total population in China. The ancestors of the Deng family, who migrated from Hongdong and Dahuaishu during the Ming Dynasty, were from Pingyang and Taiyuan prefectures, Ze, Lu, Liao, Fen, and Qin provinces, as well as Hongdong and Zhaocheng counties. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, it was ordered to relocate the large locust trees in Hongdong to other places. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shanxi and other places.

The earliest record of the surname Deng can be found in the Zhou Dynasty's "Shiben".

There are three main sources of surnames:

① Derived from the surname Si. According to the "History of the Road", it is said that during the Xia Dynasty, Emperor Zhongkang had descendants who were enfeoffed in the state of Deng. The former territory of Deng was in the area of Dengzhou, Henan Province today. Deng Jun's descendants took the country as their surname and adopted it as the Deng surname in Henan.

② Derived from the surname Zi or Man. According to the records in "Guangyun" and "Yuanhe Xingzuan", it is said that Emperor Gao Xin had four wives and four sons, and Jiang Leisheng was an ancestor of Zhou; Jian Disheng Qi is the ancestor of Shang; Qingdu gave birth to Yao, Changyi gave birth to Zhi. Emperor Ku had a concubine named Jian Di, who was a woman of the Xiang family. One day, while taking a bath in the river, Jian Di found a swallow egg and became pregnant after eating it. Soon after, she gave birth to Qi. Qi grew up and was awarded the title of Shang and given the surname of his son for his contributions in assisting Yu the Great in controlling floods. It was passed down to the 14th generation descendant Minglu, also known as Tianyi. Under his leadership, the Shang family overthrew the rule of Xia Jie and established the Shang Dynasty. It was then passed down to Emperor Gaozong of Shang, Wuding, who granted his uncle Manji the title of Marquis of Man and gave him the surname Man. Later, the Man family changed the title to Deng, which is now located in Dengcheng, west of Meng County, Henan Province. It lasted for over 600 years through the Western Zhou and Spring and Autumn periods. During the Western Zhou Dynasty, Deng State was a relatively important non surname feudal state in the southern part of the Zhou Dynasty. In the Spring and Autumn Period, King Wu of Chu and Duke Zhuang of Zheng both married the daughter of Deng State's ruler and called her Lady Deng Man. After Deng became an enemy of Chu, in the 16th year of Duke Zhuang of Lu, King Wen of Chu destroyed Deng. The descendants of the ruler of Deng changed their surnames to Deng as a tribute to their homeland. Also known as the Deng surname in Henan. It is historically known as the authentic Deng surname.

③ Derived from the surname Li. According to the "Preface to the Genealogy of the Deng Family in Anhua", Li Congyi, the eighth son of Li Yu, the ruler of the Southern Tang Dynasty, was granted the title of Prince Deng. In 975 AD, after the Song Dynasty conquered the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong of Song ordered the capture of the Southern Tang royal family. Li Congyi's son Tianhe fled, and his descendants became known as the Deng family in Hunan.

The Deng surname county lords mainly include Nanyang Commandery, Anding Commandery, Gaomi Commandery, Pingyang Commandery, Changsha Commandery, Chen Commandery, Luoyang, Yichun County, Nanxiong County, etc. Nanyang Commandery: First established in the 35th year of King Zhao of Qin during the Warring States period (272 BC). The capital was located in Wan County (now Nanyang City, Henan Province).
