The surname cao
It was inherited from Lu Zhong and King Wen, and its founding ancestors were Cao An and Cao Zhenduo. It is the 32nd of the hundred major surnames in contemporary China. The contemporary population surnamed Cao is approximately seven million, accounting for about 0.57 percent of the total national population. The founding ancestors of the Cao family, who immigrated to the Great Locust Tree in Hongtong during the Ming Dynasty, were from the two prefectures of Pingyang and Taiyuan, the five prefectures of Ze, Lu, Liao, Fen and Qin, and the two counties of Hongtong and Quwo. In the early Ming Dynasty, the great locust trees in Hongtong were moved to other places in a concentrated manner. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shanxi and other places.
The earliest record of the Cao surname can be found in the "Shiben" of the Zhou Dynasty.
There are three sources of his surname:
① After the ancient tribal chief 颛顼. According to the Guangyun and Yuanhe Xingzuan, it is said that Changyi, the son of the Yellow Emperor, married Changpu, the daughter of the Shushan clan, and they had the Gaoyang clan of Zhuanxu. Therefore, Cao An is the progenitor of the Cao surname. During the Zhou Dynasty, King Wu reenfeoffed Cao Xia, a descendant of Cao An, to the State of Zhu. Later, the State of Zhu was conquered by the State of Chu. Some of the people of Zhu continued to use the surname Cao, while others took the name of their state as their surname and changed it to Zhu. From this, it can be seen that over two thousand years ago, the Cao and Zhu surnames were originally one family of the same origin and ancestor. It is the Cao surname from Shandong.
② It originated from the Ji surname. According to the "General Annals: Genealogy" and "Yuanhe Xingzuan", during the Western Zhou Dynasty, King Wu reenfeoffed the descendants of Cao An and enfeoffed the Cao territory to the thirteenth son of King Wen of Zhou, Zhen Duo, who established the capital at Taoqiu. The former site of Taoqiu is located in the southwest of Dingtao County, Shandong Province today. The State of Cao was conquered by the State of Song in 487 BC. According to the "History of the Sui Dynasty", people from the Cao State in the Western Regions who moved to China in ancient times took the name of their state, Cao, as their surname. According to the "History of the Later Han Dynasty", there was a man named Cao Song in the Later Han Dynasty, originally surnamed Xiahou, but later changed his surname to Cao.
It is the Cao surname of Anwei.
