The surname hu
It was inherited from King Ping of Zhou and Shu Yu of Tang, and its founding ancestors were Prince Hu and hu 鞫 ju. The founding ancestors of the Hu family, who immigrated from the Great Locust Tree in Hongtong during the Ming Dynasty, were from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongtong County, Zhaocheng County and other places. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, they were relocated to other places in a concentrated manner from the Great Locust Tree in Hongtong. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Shanxi and other places.
The earliest record of the Hu surname can be found in the "General Annals of the Song Dynasty: Brief Account of Clans".
There are mainly two sources of the surname:
① It originates from the Ji surname. According to the "General Annals: Brief Account of Clans", King Ping of Zhou had a son named Prince Hu. His descendants then took their ancestor's courtesy name Hu as their surname.
② It originates from the Ji surname. During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a minister named Hu 鞫 in the State of Jin. His ancestors were descendants of a side branch of Tang Shuyu. He once lived in the Quanrong tribe and thus took the surname hu.
The main couplets for the Hu surname are: Governance must start from the body (Hu Juan Zi); Father only hopes for his son Zhong (Hu Tu).
The ancestral homes of the Hu surname are Hedong Prefecture, Taiyuan Prefecture and Hongnong Prefecture. The Qin Dynasty established the Hedong Commandery, with its administrative center at Anyi, and it governed the southwestern part of Jin. The ancestral hall names are Taiyuan Hall, Hongnong Hall, Boshi Hall and Qimu Hall.
The "Great Dictionary of Chinese Names" includes 7 examples of the Hu surname, and the "Great Dictionary of Chinese Names Through the Ages" includes 8 examples. During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a minister named Hu Tu in the State of Jin. His son was Hu Yan, whose courtesy name was Zi Fan. During the Warring States Period, the State of Wei had a fox scroll that once answered a question from King Wen of Wei. During The Three Kingdoms period, the Shu Han state had Hu Du. During the Ming Dynasty, there was Hu Zhong, a native of Yangqu, who was skilled in calligraphy and served as a member of the Central Secretariat during the Hongwu period.
According to the seventh national census, there are 1,371 people surnamed Hu in Shanxi Province, 1,245 in Linfen City and 1,164 in Hongtong County.
The ancestral altar of the Hu surname is enshrined in the No. 5 Altar in the Ancestral Hall of the Great Locust Tree.
