The surname Hua
It inherits the Fan family, with Fan Wencheng as its founding ancestor, and is the 257th surname in contemporary China. The founding ancestors of the Hua family, who immigrated from the Great Locust Tree in Hongtong during the Ming Dynasty, were from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongtong County, Zhaocheng County and other places. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, they were relocated to other places in a concentrated manner from the Great Locust Tree in Hongtong. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Shanxi and other places.
The earliest record of the surname Hua can be found in the Song Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties, in "Xingyuan".
There are mainly three sources of the surname:
① It originates from the surname Fan. According to the "Research on Surnames", in the later period of the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a Luan family in the State of Jin, which was very powerful and held sway over the entire court. When it was Luan Ying's time, his mother, Luan Qi, was the daughter of Fan Gai. Due to being widowed in middle age, she fled privately with her family's ministers and guests. Luan Ying discovered this and Luan Qi took the initiative to report to his father Fan Gai that Luan Ying was planning a rebellion. Fan Gai was worried that the power of the Luan family was too great and endangered the country. On this ground, he exiled Luan Ying. Luan Ying then occupied Quwo and openly rebelled. He borrowed elite troops from the State of Qi and at the same time made an agreement with Wei Shu, the commander of the capital, to cooperate from the inside out. After everything was ready, Luan Ying suddenly sent troops to surround the capital. Wei Shu also hurriedly gathered his forces, preparing to open the city gates to let the rebels enter. At this extremely critical moment, Fan Gai's thirteen-year-old son, Fan Yang, rode alone to Wei Shu's chariot, claiming in a mysterious way that "the Lord summoned him". Taking advantage of the moment when Wei Shu was in a daze, he jumped onto his chariot and kidnapped him with his sword. This is the story historically known as "Little Fan Yang's Intelligence Moved Wei Shu". As Wei Shu was kidnapped and the rebel army was not united, the rebellion was quelled. Later, Fan Yang also ruled in the State of Jin. Because Fan Yang was young, handsome, brave and resourceful, he was called General Hua. Among his descendants, there was a man named Fan Wencheng who admired Fan Yang's charm and took his nickname as his surname, which later changed to the surname Hua.
② It originated from the surname Hua and was changed. According to the "Research on Surnames", a branch of the Hua surname originated from the Hua surname. In ancient times, there was no Hua surname, and it was generally written as "Hua". Later, "hua" came to mean "flower" among flowers and plants, so some people with the Hua surname also changed their surname to Hua.
