Mother Stone
On the mother stone’s north side are four small seal‑style characters: “Yangguo Zhao Li.” “Yangguo” signifies that Hongtong was the site of the ancient State of Yang, while “Zhao Li” refers to Zhao City, the fief granted to Zao Fu, the legendary progenitor of the Zhao clan. On the stone’s south side, the three characters “Mother Stone” are the final masterpiece of Master Dong Shouping, a renowned Chinese calligrapher and painter who was also a native of Hongtong. It is called the “Mother Stone” because to its west lies the Fen River, which the people of Hongtong revere as their “mother river,” and because this very spot was home to our immigrant ancestors—watching over our ancestral homeland generation after generation, year after year, just as a mother watches over her child.
