Second- and third-generation locust trees
To the east of the first-generation giant locust tree stands its second‑generation descendant, which has long since withered; it is four hundred years old. Though the tree is now dead, its significance endures. There are many varieties of locust trees—Chinese locust, black locust, weeping locust, and red‑flowered locust—but the giant locust here is the Chinese locust. Known also as the “clumsy locust,” it enjoys only a six‑month growing season each year. Even so, the third‑generation locust tree, now lush and thriving, has already reached nearly a century in age.
