The First Hongdong Great Locust Tree “Root Ancestor Cup” Poetry Competition
2026-03-10
On the ninth day, I return to Hongtong County and send my regards to the Great Locust Tree.
Liaoning Xu Changhong
One day, the emerald clouds are shaken loose and gathered; on the desolate street, autumn fills the eye.
The letter is borne by the west wind, never to be swept away; year after year, homesickness clings to the branches.

Ode to the Ancient Locust Tree
Hunan Zhu Zhaolin
The ancient locust of Hongtong is a marvel under heaven, its luxuriant boughs and dense foliage display a majestic grace. Green clouds canopy the ground like a verdant curtain, while its dark hues stretch skyward, unfurling like delicate eyebrows.
The locust tree, in its native land, has stood for a thousand years; whether it be Qin or Han, the passage of time is forgotten. As virtue flows forth, it rises from the earth; the noble man gathers the small to bring forth the great.
Tenfold the trunk, braving frost and ice; myriad roots branch forth in myriad schools. Noble spirit fills the vast expanse of heaven and earth, unswayed by the rank of a three‑duke minister.
Leaves return to their roots, nurturing profound richness; the roots weave a culture that endures through the ages. With deep affection for our homeland and ancestral heritage, the descendants of Yan and Huang alike look forward with hope.
There is no root without water, and all living things receive their mandate from Heaven. How could a child beneath the locust tree fail to show reverence? With a heart full of crimson blood, I offer it to the Yellow Emperor.
On this day, the land of China brims with the vigor of spring, and our rivers and mountains yet await the restoration of the golden realm. The vast bounty of spring’s grace spares no thing; beneath the shade of locust trees, it far extends its cool embrace over the southern lands.
