Tracing the History of the Great Locust Tree in Hongtong

Guangdong, Liu Yunling

Yellow dust veils the road, and wails resound far and wide; ancient locusts sway as the fierce winds of heaven sweep down.

The Hongwu edict was proclaimed throughout the Three Jins, and all the people of Jin were scattered like tumbleweed.

The elder brother, with his official register in hand, went to Longxi, while the younger brother, led by a rope, was taken to Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

The road stretches far, shrouded in mist and clouds; as I set out, I only break off a branch of the locust tree.

Heaven is vast and boundless, earth stretches endlessly; where, pray tell, do not fine trees take root?

Wherever the wandering monk alights, there he finds peace; in the south, fragrant blossoms bloom, while in the north, snows drift—thus the lineage of the Chan school unfolds.

To reclaim new land, one spares no toil; with humble beginnings, one forges ahead through hardship.

Riches and honors, poverty and lowliness—each has been my lot; yet, true to our family’s legacy, I carry on the martial spirit of old.

For six hundred years, my parting dreams have lingered—how could I dare forget the place from which I came?

The old stork still seems to roost by the Fen River, while my ancestors would often face the setting sun.

Fortunately, the revered shrine still stands today; upon my return, I shall, as promised, offer a thousand cups in solemn libation.

Yet upon beholding the newly sprouted sapling, its lush green foliage and golden blossoms exuded a fragrant charm.
