The surname Chunyu

The earliest recorded mention of the Chunyu surname appears in the Eastern Han text “Fengsu Tong: Surname Chapter.”
[Origin of the Surname] The surname originates from a country name used as a family name. During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a small state called Chunyu, whose former territory is now located northeast of Anqiu County in Shandong Province. Later, Chunyu was annexed by the State of Qi, and the descendants of its rulers adopted the original state name, Chunyu, as their surname.
[Clan Origin] The ancestral home of the Chunyu clan is the Henei Commandery. Henei Commandery was established during the Chu–Han transition period and corresponded roughly to the region along the north bank of the Yellow River within present-day Henan Province. Its administrative center was Huai County, located southwest of today’s Wuzhi County in Henan.
[Family‑Hall Couplets] The couplets of the Chunyu clan include: “A tale of wit and humor preserved through the ages (Chunyu Kun); a scholar renowned far and wide (Chunyu Yue).” “Brothers all loyal ministers in the late Sui dynasty (Chunyu Nan, Chunyu Lang); safeguarding the realm, he served as governor of Bianzhou (Chunyu Nan).” “In the dream of the Great Locust Tree, he wed the princess (Chunyu Fen); at the granary, he was fortunate to raise a virtuous daughter (Chunyu Yi).” “Skilled in the art of strategy and rhetoric; his remonstrances once kept him up all night over wine (Chunyu Kun); a master of medicine, he transmitted the Plain Questions, and his daughter, Ti Ying, was a paragon of virtue (Chunyu Yi).”
[Notable Figures] The “Great Dictionary of Chinese Personal Names” records six instances of the Chunyu surname, while the “Great Dictionary of Personal Names Throughout Chinese History” lists fourteen. Among the historically renowned figures bearing the Chunyu surname are: during the Warring States period, there was the scholar Chunyu Kun of the State of Qi, as well as Chunyu Yue, a scholar-official; in the Han dynasty, there was Chunyu Chang, a native of Yuancheng and the Marquis of Dingling; in the early Western Han, there was Chunyu Yi; and in the Tang dynasty, there was Chunyu Lang, a native of Yan.
[Altar Cabinet] The ancestral tablets of the Chunyu clan are enshrined in Altar Cabinet No. 10 of the Ancestral Hall beneath the Great Locust Tree.
