1992, Ancestral Text of the Guhuai Relocation Descendants
On the fourth day of the fourth month in the year 1992 of the Common Era, during the Qingming season of the Ren-Shen year according to the lunar calendar: Six hundred thousand people of Huai Township, together with descendants of the ancient locust tree who had traveled far to return and seek their roots, solemnly offered flowers and fresh fruits as tribute at the site where the ancient locust tree once stood—the very place where the early settlers gathered and dispersed. With heartfelt reverence for their ancestors, they grandly held the second Root-Seeking Ancestral Worship Festival. Looking back to the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, frequent wars and successive epidemics left countless households desolate. The Central Plains, in particular, suffered especially severe calamities; corpses lay scattered across the land, and everywhere was filled with sorrowful desolation. To revive these vast, barren regions and strengthen the defenses of the frontier fortresses, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty launched a large-scale resettlement program, relocating people to the Central Plains and border areas. On April 5, 1991—corresponding to the twenty-first day of the second lunar month in the year Xinwei—during the Qingming season, 600,000 sons and daughters of the Huai region, together with descendants of those who migrated under the great locust‑tree relocation scheme from all corners of the country, solemnly held the inaugural Root‑Seeking Ancestral Rite at the site of the Ming‑dynasty resettlement: “the Ancient Great Locust Tree.” There, they recalled their forebears’ poignant farewell to their native lands and their arduous journey far from home; they honored the illustrious ancestors who pioneered new territories and revitalized the Central Plains; and they offered the pure, sincere hearts of the children of the ancient locust tree—devoted to their roots, reverent toward their ancestors, and loyal to their homeland. Their piety was heartfelt and unwavering, their reverence deep and earnest. At the end of the Yuan dynasty, the court was rife with corruption, officialdom shrouded in darkness, warfare broke out frequently, and calamities and epidemics persisted without respite. The people struggled in dire hardship, eking out a meager existence day by day.
